To celebrate International Women's Day, we've decided to turn it into a week full of celebrating women we admire and who we think are really making a difference. Every day this week, we're going to be bringing you one powerhouse a day.

In the fifth segment of this series, we got to interview Abbey Jones, founder of Bad People Book Club, a subscription book box that turns books into cocktail recipes.

In your own words, tell us what you do?

Bad People Book Club is a subscription book service that transforms books into cocktail recipes.  Each month subscribers get a book and cocktail ingredients in the theme of the book.

What inspired you to start Bad People Book Club?

I found that as I eased (read: kicked and screamed) my way into adulthood, my time for reading was sacrificed.  This was especially disappointing for me because I used to be the kid that got into trouble for staying up too late reading.  I realised that a lot of my peers were in the same situation – so I wanted to recontextualise reading by making books fun and social.

What’s the best thing about bringing people together via books?

This isn’t your mama’s book club.  Books can teach us so much about the world we live in - but the way they're approached is often outdated/ inaccessible. We aim to knock them off this pedestal by providing real life topics for discussion and experiences.

Any plans to write your own book soon?

I wrote my own book as my dissertation in uni but didn't try to get it published.

What’s your best advice for girls wanting to start a business now?

Summon the confidence of an average white male and just do it.  No one is going to back you if you don't back yourself.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Sometimes progress and success occur very slowly but so long as you're heading in the right direction you'll get somewhere in the end.

Any upcoming exciting projects you can tell us about?

We're looking to create more 3D experiences of our boxes but we're very much in the developmental phase.
